The Bloomberg Barclays Indices continue a forty year tradition of market leadership, excellence and client service. Since 1973*, the Bloomberg Barclays Indices have been the most widely used indices for fixed income investors seeking objective, rules-based, and representative benchmarks to measure asset-class risk and returns.
Broad product coverage
Bloomberg Barclays fixed income and inflation-linked benchmarks are an integral part of the active and passive global portfolio management processes. With broad product coverage, a strong history of innovation, and objective and transparent rules, Bloomberg Barclays Indices have continually been recognized in both the US and Europe as the top index provider.
Custom benchmarks
We offer a broad and evolving suite of unbiased index products from which investors may select or customize the most appropriate benchmark for their portfolio needs. Coverage includes investment grade, high yield, emerging market and inflation-linked indices. Flagship fixed-income benchmarks include the U.S., Euro, Asia-Pacific, and Global Aggregate Indices, U.S. Municipals, High-Yield and Emerging Markets.
In addition to our flagship indices, Bloomberg publishes thousands of bespoke benchmarks and actively works with index users in a consultative manner on benchmark design, methodology, back-testing, selection, and documentation of their custom indices.
Exchange-traded funds (ETFs)
Billions of ETF assets under management are linked to Bloomberg indices and the largest smart beta ETF providers use Bloomberg Indices. Bloomberg is recognized as a partner to ETF providers in the development of custom index solutions.
Bloomberg Total Return Swaps (BTRS)
Total Return Swaps (TRS) provide an alternative vehicle to trading the underlying index of cash securities, to simplify and avoid the infrastructure and maintenance associated with cash positions. Bloomberg offers standardized TRS contracts on the Bloomberg Barclays Indices (BTRS), enabling investors to gain synthetic exposure to cash bonds, and specifically, the market leading Bloomberg Barclays Indices.
Bloomberg Barclays MSCI ESG Indices
We’ve partnered with MSCI ESG Research, a leading provider of environmental, social and governance (ESG) data, to develop the Bloomberg Barclays MSCI ESG Fixed Income Indices, the market’s first fixed income index family to incorporate measures of ESG risk.
Bloomberg SASB ESG Indices
We created these indices in collaboration with the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) using R-Factor™, an environmental, social and governance (ESG) scoring solution developed by State Street Global Advisors. The index family focuses on the subset of ESG factors most likely to materially impact the financial condition or operating performance of companies in a given industry.
In April 2019, Bloomberg confirmed that Chinese RMB-denominated government and policy bank securities will be added to the Bloomberg Barclays Global Aggregate Index. This is a result of the completion of several planned operational enhancements that were implemented by the People’s Bank of China (PBoC) and Ministry of Finance and State Taxation Administration.
When fully accounted for in the Global Index, local currency Chinese bonds will be the fourth largest currency component, following the US dollar, euro and Japanese yen. China’s debt market offers some of the best returns globally, yet foreign investors own just 2% of onshore bonds. Learn more.
